Unicorn One Block Wonder - Fairy Tale Blog Hop

Welcome to day two of the Fairy Tales Blog Hop hosted by Joan of Moose Stash Quilting.

Hopefully you are not sick of seeing One Block Wonders, this is my third post in a row with them, but I couldn't resist sewing this panel up for this hop.  Unicorns with beautiful colors and a castle glowing in the background... all kind of fairy tale goodness going on here.

I got tired of flipping the ruler back and forth cutting one strip at a time into triangles, so I laid out all my strips and cut them one way then turned the ruler and went back and cut them all the other way.
Made it a wee bit quicker.

I saved the edges of each strip and sewed those together to create even more triangles.

I had over 200 hexagons with the extras I pieced together.  I used all but one and a half.

I am loving the colors in some of these blocks!

They didn't all fit on the design board.  Had to squeeze everything in.

I love pressing the seams open.  Some people press them all one way and then swirl the center, which works too, but I really love this look!

So many fun hexagons in this one.  The panel was a wide one, a full 36 inches.
I cut my strips at 3.25 inches.  With everything sewn together the top measures approximately 85 x 83 inches.  It's a biggie!

Check out the back with all those open seams!  Super cool.
Next up for this one is to pick out some backing and get it quilted!

Make sure to keep hopping to see all the wonderful Fairy Tale inspiration today!

Progress on Mondo Bags.

Finally made some progress on my three Mondo Bags. Most of the month of June has been busy with traveling and game playing.  I did sew a few minutes a day, and when I say few I mean one seam a day sometimes.  That makes for some slow progress, but I finally have all the sections sewn together and all the inside fabric cut and ironed onto the fusible fleece.   I have to travel again this weekend so I might not get these done in time to be added as a finish for my second quarter Finish-A-Long.

I also still need to finish my goal for A lovely year of Finishes too.  Egads, I only have three and half days of the month left. I might not make my June goal for ALYOF.  Ah well, too much playing around in the month of June I suppose. I have been enjoying the summer.

Mondo Bags in Progress

After finishing up my Slide Show quilt I went to my Q2 Finish A-Long list to pick a new project to finish up. I decided to go with the Mondo bags.  I have some packages I want to mail out and it would be great to be able to have the Mondo bags ready so they can go in the boxes as well.
Each bag uses 208 squares.  I had most of them already cut so I only had to cut a few charm squares to get the remaining squares I needed for all three bags.  I made some good progress, but finishing them up will have to wait a bit since my machine is shoved in a corner and inaccessible.

I spent yesterday pulling up the old carpet in my sewing room which means the sewing machine has to go on vacation for a bit till things get put back together.  Hubby and I will be laying new floor in the evenings when he gets off work.  It shouldn't take too long... I hope.  :)

Cutting For Jacks

When Sinta and Sherri announced we could pick any Schnibble pattern for AYOS this month I knew exactly which one I was going to make - Jacks.  I even had the pattern in my hands on the 1st of the month.  But here I am, less than a week till the parade and I am just starting my Schnibble. My delay was trying to figure out which fabric I wanted to use.  That always seems to be the hold up for me. I am worried if I pick the wrong fabrics I will ruin the quilt. Or I think I want to save some of my nicer fabric for a different project, but I don't have any "different" projects in mind. Sometimes I think I can't cut into a fabric because it hasn't sat on the shelf long enough for me to admire it.

Well, I finally told myself I was being ridiculous and picked up my newest charm packs, Tapestry by moda, and cut them up.  I was worried for nothing.  They are going to be great for this pattern and this can be the "different" project I have been waiting for. And when I am done, the fabric can sit on my shelf as a new quilt while I decide who I want to gift it to.  :)

Shirt Quilts Progress

Yesterday I finished up the 40 blocks I need for two more shirt tops.

They will go with these blocks I finished at the end of February:

I was going to put my design wall up to layout all these blocks and start sewing them together, but I am baby sitting this week and need easy access to the room I sew in and the living room. Since the design wall covers the french doors that connect the two, I decided to wait.

Instead I started the quilting on Shirt Quilt #1.
I am almost finished with the stitch in the ditch, I have 1 side of the border and a wee bit left on the other corner. Once that is done I will break out the darning foot for some free motion quilting in the string blocks.

Starting my Mon Ami

Last night I made my first block for my Mon Ami Quilt.  I haven't made all the other blocks yet, but I have picked out the fabrics I want to use.

I went through my 2.5 inch fabric bin and pulled out 25 different blues and 25 different yellows to make all the blocks.  I was worried I wouldn't have enough yellows, but sure enough I did.  I had exactly enough.  The blues I had plenty of, I even had the option to pick which ones I wanted to go in the quilt and which ones I didn't.

I also cut enough white square to go with all the blue and yellow squares.  Later on this week I will mark all the white squares and sew all the half square triangles together.  I am very excited that I will have my very own blue and yellow quilt.

Blue and yellow together is one of my favorite color combinations. I have made quite a few quilts in this color combo, but I have given them all away.  One of my favorites was made in 2004.  I gave it to my brother for Christmas that year.  It was my first monkey wrench quilt.  A lot of the leftovers of that quilt will be going into this Mon Ami quilt.

Here is the monkey wrench quilt I made in 2004.
Funny how I thought I had a really good camera back then.  I thought all my pictures turned out really neat, but as I went back to find this photo, I realized that my camera back then didn't take pictures as well as the one I use today.  That makes me wonder how my pictures will look 6 more years from now.  I don't see how they can get better, but then again, I thought the same thing 6 years ago.
