Something Wicked Blog Hop

It's the final day of the Something Wicked Halloween Blog Hop hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt.

I love the Halloween hop each year, it's one of my favorites.  I have signed up to play along almost every year, so I am a little sad it will be ending.  There is always so much spookiness to see during the Halloween hops and this week has been no exception!

For my project, I made a Halloween Log Cabin quilt.  I have been short on sewing time lately but still wanted a new quilt to drape over the couch and this one went together fairly quick.

It is made with twelve inch blocks and some sashing. 

Batch sewing the blocks made the quilt come together pretty fast.

I took the quilt downtown for a photo shoot.

My downtown has some unique buildings that make perfect backdrops.

And the sun was shining just right to pick up the quilting.  You can't see it too good in the photo, but I used orange thread. It turned out fantastic!

This is an old tobacco barn that is no longer in use, and was moved downtown for historical purposes.

It had a nice rustic bench perfect for my quilt.

And some old grinding stones.

I used more Halloween prints from my stash for the back. So it's wickedly spooky on both sides!

Diamond Pathways - Flower Pot Blog Tour and Free Paper Piecing Template

It is almost the end of the Flower Pot Blog Tour and today I am showing off the Flower Pot collection in my newest quilt called Diamond Pathways.

The hop is hosted by Jennifer of Inquiring Quilter as she celebrates her new Island Batik Signature fabric collection Flower Pot.

I started my quilt with strips of almost every print in the Flower Pot collection.  Island Batik sent me some of their Neutrals and black batiks to complete the quilt.   

To make the quilt I started with sets of four 2 inch strips.

I sewed the strips into six strip sets. Each print was offset an inch to eliminate waste when cutting the first triangle from the strip. Since I was using strip sets, I cut the paper piecing pattern into templates instead of using it to paper piece.  So if you don't enjoy paper piecing, you can still make this quilt using traditional templates.

I wasn't quite sure how many triangles I could get per strip, I knew I needed at least 5, but made one more just to be safe.  I got eleven triangles out of each strip and a few squeezed out 12,  More than enough for the 56 I needed for the quilt.

The quilt is seven blocks across and eight blocks down. Each block finishes at 8 inches.

A two inch black border goes all around the quilt making it finish at 60 x 68 inches.

For the backing, I'm still using up older yardage. I started off with a piece that was the length of the quilt, plus a few inches.

I cut it in half longways and then filled in the middle with other prints and strips.

I love how the back turned out and the fact that I am using up fabric that has been sitting and waiting for its time to shine.

Finished Fall Jelly Roll Quilt with Matching Pillow

 I've spent a little more time in the sewing room and finished up my Fall Jelly Roll Quilt and also whipped up a festive pillow to go with it.

I used up the last scraps from my Jelly roll, along with some background fabric and made Half Square Triangles.

I trimmed them all up to 2 inches.

And settled on a 9 x 9 layout.

Added some skinny borders and sewed everything together.

I took the quilt and pillow downtown for a fun photo shoot.

There were several benches,

Lots of pretty landscaping,

And fun brickwork.

There is even a rustic storage building that made a perfect backdrop.

It quilted up pretty quick with some all over meanders, swirls, and some weird things you can call leaves.

I tried to do an oak leaf, but it looks more like a bunch of wavy lines instead. 

I'm excited to have this drapped over the couch this fall. With the pillow nested next to it.

Bee Kind Blog Hop

The theme for the September blog hop challenge hosted by Joan of Moose Stash Quilting, is all about "kind" projects: a favorite charity project, a free pattern, or anything that shows we spread a little kindness, everywhere we go. Of course, Bee projects of all kinds fit right in there too!

My project is a quick little baby quilt that can be sewn up in half a day. 

The main block is a nine patch that sews up really quick.

Perfect for charity quilts or a quick handmade gift and is beginner friendly.  

It was so quick to make, I made two!

This project actually started out from a gift. 

Several years ago a friend gave me a leftover jelly roll with almost all the strips still in it.  There were 36 and a half strips left over! 

I cut it up into 2.5 inch squares and had the perfect shade of yellow to match for the border.

The  9 patches measure 6 inches square when finished, and with only 12 blocks, the quilt is small. 34 x 42 inches. Perfect for the car or tummy time.

It was small enough I could load them both on my longarm and quilt them at the same time.

And check out the back. I threw in some bees.

I did a little custom quilting on these two, but if you did an all over meander, the quilting can be just as fast as sewing the top together.

To keep on with the spirit of giving, I will be donating one of these to a youth fundraiser later next year.

I still had lots of squares left over, so I made a cute little pillow to go with it.

After working on my Island Batik applique project this month I had applique on the brain so I added a cute flower on the front.
