My Project for theRuffles Blog Hop

Today is Day 6 of the Ruffles blog hop, hosted by Mdm Samm of Sew We Quilt, and Amy of Sew Incredibly Crazy.  When I first heard about the Ruffle hop I knew it was the perfect motivation to make myself a new church bag.  I have been carrying around a plain black tote bag for about 12 years.  It was definitely time for a change. So I came up with this smaller prettier version.

I was able to go with a smaller bag since because the wonderful digital age has given me access to all my class manuals and scriptures right on my phone and that means less books to lug around. My only requirements for this bag was that it had to be big enough to carry my doodle pad and it had to have a front pocket for easy access to my keys, phone, and pens.  I also have room on the inside for my fancier pens that are in a small case.

Some of you may be wondering why I need a doodle pad at church, but in all honesty, it helps me pay attention.  I noticed no matter how hard I try to pay attention while staring at the people speaking, my mind wanders. I end up thinking about the height of the podium, or the flowers sitting next to it. Or I focus on what the speaker is wearing, wondering why their left sleeve is raised slightly higher then the right, or why the manufacturer choose a certain type of button over the other - small trivial things that take me away from the spiritual message being given.

Then one day when the kids were little, I was doodling with them during the meeting and I noticed I got more out of that session than I had in a long time. I tested my theory the next week and sure enough doodling helped me pay attention better in church, so I went out and bought me a pad and some pens and now I doodle in church and this Sunday I will have a cute fancy ruffled bag to bring with me.

Make sure you stop by the other blogs today and check out their ruffled creations.

Reading about why you doodle in church is funny. I can so relate. I find writing does the same thing for me, helps me pay attention. I love your bag, it's so pretty.

Lovely bag...can't believe you call that "doodling"! Myself, I like to knit or crochet plain dishcloths. It keeps my mind open to hear what is being said.

Love that bag and doodle pad. As an adult with ADHD (and not using drugs) I realize that doodling in a meeting/church/school was my way to pay attention thru all my years. Thanks for sharing!

Your bag is beautiful, the colours of the batiks are great! I have to admit I rarely go to church, but perhaps I should also sew me such a bag and doodle.... LOL

Your little church bag is beautiful! I had to look twice to be sure I hadn't accidentally skipped over somehow to my sister's blog. She also doodles during church and your zentangles look just like hers! She also finds that doodling helps her concentrate better.

Your church bag is lovely , the ruffles add so much charm to what would already be a beautiful bag . By the way your doodling is nice too :-)

I love your bag. I have trouble staying awake in church (thyroid disease...when I stop moving, my body wants a full stop) so I do small handwork in church. I actually talked to my pastor and let him know why and he was fine with it. Hexies make a great take along but I've sewn down bindings in church, too. Either way, like you say, it actually helps me be present and learn. Beth @ Words & Stitches...who is sharing your day!

I love the bag and am sure you will enjoy such a cheerful upgrade from a plain black tote. And I absolutely love your doodles. Have you ever done anything quilty with them? Or used them in any way in fabric arts? And, by the way, love your strawberrys from a couple of posts ago. Couldn't resist exploring your blog further.

Hey whatever works and helps you concentrate with that doodling. Must have something to do with which part of your brain is being utilized for which purpose.

The bag is gorgeous. I bet you will get a lot of compliments when you head to church!

What an adorable ruffly bag! Great doodles, too! I understand about doing something to help keep your mind off details. I alwyas take notes, even though I rarely look at them. I am a visual learner and know that I need to have something written in front of me. Even if there are bullet points, I usually write something to help with the concentration. I can only imagine how doodling helps with quilting. I wish I had a flair for that type of thing. Thanks for participating and great inspiration. I just had to peek at some of your other posts and I wowed.
