Island Batik Storm at Sea Blog Hop - Twilight Glow

Welcome to my day of the Island Batik Storm at Sea Blog Hop!

Today I get to showcase the new Twilight Glow fabric line by Kathy Engle hitting stores in December.

The name and the colors of this line had me envisioning evenings on the beach watching the different shades and colors of the night sky glow and change as the sun makes its final decent and the stars begin to peak out.

The name itself was the inspiration for my quilt.

The Storm at Sea quilt is made of small and large Square in a Square blocks and Diamonds in Rectangle Blocks. I used the Square Squared ruler by Deb Tucker of Studio 180 Designs along with her supplemental Technique Sheet to get cutting instructions for the double square in a square.

For the diamonds I used the Diamond Recs ruler, again by Deb Tucker.  I love these rulers.  They gave me precise units and I can skip the pulling paper off the back if I would have gone my usual route and paper pieced these.

Since my colors intermingled in the same diamonds and larger squares, I had to pay attention to what colors were sewed where. I used the design wall a lot for this.

Almost done.

This quilt has Hobbs batting inside!
I used their Tuscany Cotton Wool Blend and love how it turned out. The quilt feels so soft!

It was quilted with a bright yellow Auriful thread...

And quilted with a Schmetz quilting needle.

I designed this one in EQ8 and even played around with some fancy borders, but I ran out of the dark blues and purples so I opted for the single thin border and an orange binding.  But you can get glance of what it would look like with some snail trail blocks added in a bigger border.  This version also uses the lightest yellow in the line, which is the only fabric that didn't get into the original version.

The quilt measures about 55 inch square. Perfect for keeping your legs warm while enjoying the fantastic colors at twilight.

And more pictures just for fun.

I couldn't get enough of the fun colors...

So I took a lot of pictures.

Be sure to check out Sally Manke and Suzy Webster to see their version of  the Twilight Glow Storm at Sea.
