Welcome! Today I am helping Jennifer of Curlicue Creations show off her Island Batik Signature collection called Song Bird, created by Jerry Khiev. You can find it in quilt shops now!
I loved all the prints in this line and wanted to make a quilt that could showcase them all. My mind went right to my Majestic Mountains Bargello quilt pattern, which uses 2 1/2 inch strips.
Jennifer sent me a five inch strip of each print and I cut each one into two 2 1/2 inch strips.
Lumin Fabrics sent me the Island Batik neutrals to go with it. I chose six different prints to add a little variety rather than using a solid white fabric between the main prints.
This fabric line also comes in a precut strip set too, which can save you from having to cut out 40 strips if you want to make a quilt like this of your own.

I actually designed this bargello quilt specifically for Island Batik strip packs, which contain 20 prints with two strips of each print. This makes it possible to create two identical panels to cut the bargello strips from.
With two identical panels I am able to press one panel in one direction and the other in the opposite direction, which helps nest my seams later for easier piecing.
I created this pattern in 2023, but I still love making it.
This is my fourth version of this quilt and every time it gets easier.

Once you get used to working with strip tubes and where to break them open, this quilt becomes easier to make.

I also designed the quilt specifically to use up almost every inch of the strip set. I didn't want to add anything else to my scrap bins when I was done with this quilt.
It does take a little time to sew the strips together, cut them back out, and line them back up again in order, but the more you do it the faster it goes.
Again, the quilt may look intimidating at first glance, but it's really only lining up strips and sewing them together over and over.

In the other versions, I quilted some fancy feathers in the different bargello waves, but this time I opted for a quicker all over wavy pattern.
My time as an Island Batik Ambassadors has left me with a lot of solid gray batik fabric. I would get about four yards twice a year. I used it in a few quilts, but it wasn't always my favorite background color, so I have quite a pile of it, but this week I discovered it is perfect for quilt backs. It really shows off the quilting!
I have a few more yards of this gray, so I know what will be on the back of some of my future quilts!
