Unicorn One Block Wonder - Fairy Tale Blog Hop

Welcome to day two of the Fairy Tales Blog Hop hosted by Joan of Moose Stash Quilting.

Hopefully you are not sick of seeing One Block Wonders, this is my third post in a row with them, but I couldn't resist sewing this panel up for this hop.  Unicorns with beautiful colors and a castle glowing in the background... all kind of fairy tale goodness going on here.

I got tired of flipping the ruler back and forth cutting one strip at a time into triangles, so I laid out all my strips and cut them one way then turned the ruler and went back and cut them all the other way.
Made it a wee bit quicker.

I saved the edges of each strip and sewed those together to create even more triangles.

I had over 200 hexagons with the extras I pieced together.  I used all but one and a half.

I am loving the colors in some of these blocks!

They didn't all fit on the design board.  Had to squeeze everything in.

I love pressing the seams open.  Some people press them all one way and then swirl the center, which works too, but I really love this look!

So many fun hexagons in this one.  The panel was a wide one, a full 36 inches.
I cut my strips at 3.25 inches.  With everything sewn together the top measures approximately 85 x 83 inches.  It's a biggie!

Check out the back with all those open seams!  Super cool.
Next up for this one is to pick out some backing and get it quilted!

Make sure to keep hopping to see all the wonderful Fairy Tale inspiration today!

Color it Red Blog Hop

Welcome to my day of the Color It Red Blog Hop!  Hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt.

All we had to do to play along was make a project that had red in it.
Today I am showing off what I made with some of my favorite shades from my stash.

I call it Diamond Bars.

There are twelve different red fabrics in this one.
I used my 9 inch Creative Grid equilateral ruler to cut out all my triangles and angled strips.

The quilt has two different type triangles, one with a small inner white triangle and one with a large inner red triangle.  There are 36 of each.  I came up with 36  because that is exactly how many small white triangles I got from two 2.5 inch strips.  These are surrounded by 2 inch red strips.

I used yardage and fat quarters for the inner red triangles and cut four inch strips to cut the larger red triangles.  They are surrounded by 1.5 inch white strips.

They layout came about because of my need to have things be symmetrical.  I originally had all the outer red stripped triangles facing up, but that left a red bar at the bottom and not one at the top, so I started flipping rows around and came up with this layout.

I was fun to fiddle around with different triangle sizes and the layout to come up with this design.
This would be cool in scraps or rainbow color as well.

The top was pretty quick to sew up once everything was cut out.
It Measures approximately 44 x 60.

I also played around with more red fabric and used the Pixie Basket Tutorial by Fabric Mutt.
These are super cute and the perfect size to hold a bag of Valentine Chocolates.
These sew together lickety split!

Thanks for stopping by to check out my creations.

Make sure to check out all the other red creations today!

Peak a Who? Blog Hop

Welcome to my day of the Peak a Who? blog hop.  Hosted by Marian of Seams to Be Sew.  I have a few items to show today that I have worked on over the past few months.

First up, I wanted to tackle an old Halloween UFO.  I created one just like it several years ago in 2010 as part of the "La Petite - A Year of Small Projects" challenge. This pattern is called Paganini from Ms. Rosie's Quilt company and is designed for Charm Packs. When I first cut out the project I used several 5 inch strips from my yardage instead of a charm pack.  This method left me with way too much left over fabric for one quilt.  So I decided I would cut enough for two quilts, which I did.  I made the first quilt right away.  The  second one... well....

I played with it again in 2015 hoping to finish it as part of the 2015 Finish-A-Long.  I made some good progress on it and got the top done and even got the backing and batting picked out but that was it.

The next several months it got moved around and put on hold while other projects moved to the top of the to do list. It has been sitting and waiting its turn for quilting, until now.

I finally finished it as part of the third quarter of the 2018 Finish-A-Long and today am excited to show it off  to you all as part of the Peek A Who? blog hop.

And check out who is peeking around on the back.

Another one of my Spooky creations was a Halloween tote bag.

Look Who is peeking out on the front!  He was made for a Spooky Tote Swap I joined.  I actually made two identical bats. One for each side of the bag.

The paper pieced bat pattern is called midnight Bite and is from Lillyella.com. The tote pattern also comes from Lillyella.com and is a free tutorial here. The fun part of this swap was knowing who my spooky partner was.  Most the swaps I have joined are blind swaps and you don't know who your partner is till the package lands on your doorstep.   I like this way better because it allows me to get to know a new quilty friend.

This is the fantastic tote I got I got from my partner.  It is amazing what a few fabric changes can do to a pattern. And check out the fantastic embroidered witch on the back.  She even glows in the dark!

My final project is till a flimsy, mainly because of this.

My ruler foot broke on my quilting machine, I wasn't even using my quilt rulers at the time or going over any seams, just doing and all over filler in a solid piece of fabric.  Next thing I know the machine jumps and I'm out one presser foot.  So quilting on this next project will be delayed.  But not for too long, a new presser foot is already in the mail heading my way.

Not too long ago I fell in love with One Block Wonder quilts.  I have already made two and have two more cut out and I have already purchased fabric for 3 more.  What can I say, I'm hooked.

This summer I discovered One Block Wonders using panels and I had to have one of my own.
This hop was the perfect reason to buy a fabulous Halloween panel.
Seven panels to be exact.
One for the center and one to cut up.

After several different layouts options I ended up with this one. I love how the hexagons carry the distorted image away to the edges.  I can see myself making many more of these!  I think I may try it without the inner border on my next one and see how that comes out.

Make sure to visit all the other Sites today and visit any of the others you may have missed throughout the week, they have some great projects!  Scroll even further for giveaways from Fat Quarter Shop and Timeless Treasures.

We Support You - Blog Hop

Welcome to another day of Support!
Thanks to Pat  from Scrapatches and to Mdm Samm of Sew We Quilt for hosting another fantastic hop.  This hop is to show support for those we know who are dealing with Breast Cancer.  I personally know a special someone who has fought the battle and thankfully she is on the winning side.  All women who suffer are in need of support no matter what stage they are in,  from the first diagnosis to being counted as a Survivor.
When I think of support, I think of love. So I decided to add lots of love to this quilt.  I saw a tutorial for these hearts a couple week ago and knew they were the perfect addition to my support quilt.

Right now my project is currently still in progress.  I wanted it to be perfect for my friend and ended up changing it several times along the way. One of the most time consuming changes I made had me ripping out several stitches in order to get the quilt to look the way I wanted. I originally had green sashing, the same green as the bra straps, but it just wasn't the right.  After several days of staring at it I knew I had to take it all apart and change out the sashing.  After several new fabric auditions I finally found the perfect border.  That put me a little behind schedule, but it was worth it.
I am in love with this quilt!

I am in the process of hand embroidering the hangers.
I timed it and they take me about half an hour for each hanger. I was on a roll and was more than halfway done when I ran out of black floss.  It is taking way more floss than I thought to back stitch all these, but I should be able to go into town next week and pick up more #310 DMC Black.

If you are interested in making the hearts, Cluck Cluck Sew gives dimensions and instructions to make several sizes.  Check out her tutorial here.

If you would like the "We Support You" Friendship Quilt Pattern, you can purchase it for $12.00 by emailing Madame Samm directly at madamesamm@me.com

More Purge Progress

I spent a week at the lake last week.  It was so much fun I wasn't ready to come home.  This is my favorite picture from our trip.  It captures the whole trip perfectly. We were on Lake Jocassee in SC and I definitely want to go back.  The lake is so clear and pretty and cool to swim in.

The forecast had called for rain all week, but we never had any fall on us other than the first night while we were sleeping. We strategically avoided the rain at our campsite by visiting waterfalls in the area during the afternoons.

Luckily the showers were scattered and we picked the right falls to visit and had sunshine almost everyday.

When we got back I jumped right into my purge projects.

I finished up the second Brick top...

Then I cut out some white squares from my white scrap bin to go with my newly cut animal scraps...

And then I started a new charity quilt.  This one is simple squares with white sashing.
I used up most of the left over 4.5 inch scraps for this one.
The white is Kona Cotton in Snow.  I like using snow since it isn't such a bright white and is a little more forgiving when it gets dirty.

Next on the purge list is to use up some of the 2 inch squares to make a checkerboard quilt. Then I want to go through my left over bins and get some pink fabrics out for some little girl quilts.  I really love the brick tops and think they would look lovely in some girly pink and purple flower fabrics.

Purge Progress

Rachel over at Stitched in Color is hosting "The Purge".  She is encouraging us to do something with our un-loved fabrics, fabrics that we once loved but have fallen out of love with for one reason or another.  Well, a couple of months ago I already did a purge by taking all my unwanted fabric to my quilt guild meeting and let the ladies pick and choose from what they wanted. What ever they didn't want went to goodwill. So I don't really have unloved fabrics for this project, but I do have 12 bins of odd sized scraps that needed purging.
I still love all of these fabrics, but they can definitely use a purging in a good way.  They are a mix of left over pieces from quilt backings, scraps given to me by friends, and leftovers from my own craft projects. Some are slightly bigger than a fat quarter, others are extremely long 5 to 10 inch strips.  Because of their odd shapes, there isn't a spot for them in my fabric storage system and since I don't want to cut them up into smaller strips they get folded and put into these bins and shoe boxes.

I have started to organize them by color and have even pulled out some and placed them next to my color yardage, but a lot of them are novelty fabrics from when I was making cutesy baby quilts and bags to go with them and they don't seem to fit into a specific color category, so for my purge I am going to dive into these bins and make some charity quilts for the kids in our community. Hopefully by the end of the purge I can throw away some empty shoe boxes.

I started out by pulling out anything that would look good in a boy quilt.  I ended up using all animal prints and decided to use the Color Brick pattern that Rachel used for her beginner Quilt a long.

I used a smaller brick dimension so I could keep the quilt small for a little boy.  My bricks finish at 4 x 8 inches. My sashing measures half an inch and the borders are 1.5 inches.
I had enough brinks to make two small quilts.

The sashing is a purge also. It is a Kona Solid that I bought for the Kona blog hop I participated in, but I ended up not using it for the hop. Luckily it has turned out to be the perfect color for my brick mortar.

I cut out two more bricks to finish the second top and then I cut up all the leftover animal fabric into different sized squares ranging from 4.5 inches all the way down to 1.5 inches. I cut up every bit of blue and green animal print from those bins.  I didn't see much dent in the bins, but it still feels good knowing that I have used up several pieces of fabric and that I have scrappy squares already cut for another quick quilt.

Check out the link at Stitched in Color to see how everyone else's purge is going.
