UFO Blog Hop - Flowery OBW

I was excited to join the UFO blog hop this month hosted by Joan of Moose Stash Quilting. It inspired me to finish up this One Block Wonder that has been in progress since 2019.  It is made from seven different panels, six cut up and one left as is for the center.

I have a long list of UFOs... not sure I'm ready to announce the actual number here yet. Lol, let's just say I suffer from Quilters ADD. I'm easily distracted by new ideas and projects.

I will say as of now I have 7 more One block Wonders in different stages of progress.
Some are still waiting to get their hexies sewn and another one is waiting for quilting.
There are also a few more waiting to be cut up. What can I say, when those awesome panels go on sale super cheap I can't pass that up.

I went through several different layout ideas till I found the layout I loved.  There was a lot of late night sewing for this one, hence the different lighting in this photo.

I like to take pictures as the layout comes together so I can see if anything looks off.
That is one of the most fun parts for for me, trying to decide what goes where.

Once everything is in its place its time to sew the rows together.

I like to sew two rows at a time to save thread.
Sometimes I will sew another project in between to have less thread clipping.  That is another reason I have more than one One Block Wonder going.  Sometimes I like to sew hexagons of another OBW while piecing the rows of another one.

This part usually goes pretty fast when I do two rows at a time.
I tried three at a time once, but then I forgot what pile I was on and messed everything up.
With two piles I seem to do pretty good.

I like to press all my seams open for these.  Makes it easier to quilt later on.

Fitting the panel in is sometimes tricky. I always have to cut a wee bit of it off, but after all is said and done I can't remember which part is gone.  I appliqued half of some of the hexies that overlapped the panel to help everything blend in.

I use lots of pins when sewing the rows together.  It helps keep the points somewhat matching.
I love these thin tulip pins. They are my favorite!

I made the back for this one a while ago and together the top and the back have been sitting in the UFO pile just waiting to be paired with some batting and quilted.

This month, thanks to the UFO hop, it was time to get it out of the closet and into the light of day.

I quilted it with pink thread.  I didn't want a dark color over the pink flowers, so I decided pink would be good.  I did wonder if it would be ok for the black, but as soon as I started it looked fantastic.  I quilted a meander swirl and feather.  Just what ever came to mind at the time.  For the panel in the center I did try to follow the lines of the leaves and flowers, but it was very loose.

I pulled some older floral prints for the back of this one.  Again with the stripe backing.
Stripes help me use up the left over scraps and smaller pieces I have in my stash.

This is my ninth completed One Block Wonder.

Be sure to visit all the other blog hoppers today to see what UFOs they are showing off!
Could be real spaceships with aliens or loved UFOs finally getting their time to shine.

Happy Sewing!

Unicorn One Block Wonder - Fairy Tale Blog Hop

Welcome to day two of the Fairy Tales Blog Hop hosted by Joan of Moose Stash Quilting.

Hopefully you are not sick of seeing One Block Wonders, this is my third post in a row with them, but I couldn't resist sewing this panel up for this hop.  Unicorns with beautiful colors and a castle glowing in the background... all kind of fairy tale goodness going on here.

I got tired of flipping the ruler back and forth cutting one strip at a time into triangles, so I laid out all my strips and cut them one way then turned the ruler and went back and cut them all the other way.
Made it a wee bit quicker.

I saved the edges of each strip and sewed those together to create even more triangles.

I had over 200 hexagons with the extras I pieced together.  I used all but one and a half.

I am loving the colors in some of these blocks!

They didn't all fit on the design board.  Had to squeeze everything in.

I love pressing the seams open.  Some people press them all one way and then swirl the center, which works too, but I really love this look!

So many fun hexagons in this one.  The panel was a wide one, a full 36 inches.
I cut my strips at 3.25 inches.  With everything sewn together the top measures approximately 85 x 83 inches.  It's a biggie!

Check out the back with all those open seams!  Super cool.
Next up for this one is to pick out some backing and get it quilted!

Make sure to keep hopping to see all the wonderful Fairy Tale inspiration today!

Stitch It Gift It Blog Hop

I am happy to be rounding out the Stitch It, Gift It Blog Hop hosted by Carla of Creatin' in the Sticks.
I have two quilty gifts I have been working on. Both of them are Holiday quilts.  The first one you may have already seen as it was part of the Halloween Blog Hop of 2018, but it was only a top then.

It is the Halloween One Block Wonder I had been working on.  I had fully intended to keep this quilt for myself, but as I was posting photos about this on Instagram, my brother kept making comments about how much he liked it.

Usually he will comment one time, but this time he mentioned several times that he really liked it.  So I decided it needed to live with him when it got quilted.

This was the first one block wonder quilt I had made with a panel and I didn't want to loose any of the picture, so I bordered it in black then surrounded it with the hexagons.
I love this panel so much and knew I would really miss it when I finally sent it off, but I also felt it belonged in Washington state with my brother.

A couple weeks after I made the decision to let it go I saw the same panels on sale at 50% off.  I figured that was sign and bought 7 more panels to make another one for myself.

I was hoping to have my brother's version quilted and ready to go by Halloween this year, but as most UFO's do it hovered around a little longer than I anticipated.  But it is done now and ready to go.  He is expecting it and is excited to have it ready for next Halloween.

My version above omitted the black border and I ended up trimming the panel a little on the sides. Mine needs a small top and bottom border and some quilting and then it will be done. Both of these Hallowen One Block Wonders are on my 4th Quarter Finish-A-long list so the goal is to finish mine by the end of the year.

One thing I like about these two quilts is that when mine is finished, there will be two similar versions of this quilt, one on each side of the country. When I look at mine, I will think of my brother and when he looks at his, he will think of me.  Two quilts connected across America through Halloween stitches and sibling love.  What could be better than that.

The next quilty gift I am working on is a Christmas Quilt.  Yep, I am one of those people who go from Halloween right to Christmas.  I love getting all the red, green and gold out.

I have four siblings and have made a Christmas quilt for all of them but one. My oldest sister has yet to have receive a festive quilt from me for the Holidays.  So this year it is her turn.

Since my sister lives across the country, also in Washington state, I don't always get to see her Christmas decorations. For her quilt I was debating on going with aqua, red and green, or traditional red and green, but wasn't sure which one would fit her current style, so I decided to go right to the source and ask. Traditional red and green won out.

I used some red 2.5 inch strips from a pre-cut I had and some greens from a fat quarter bundle I had been holding on to.

For the pattern I wanted to do something with with Trees.  My Sister lives in the Pacific Northwest right on the edge of the forest with lovely tall trees surrounding her.

These trees aren't necessarily the Douglas Firs or Western Hemlocks of the area, but with a little imagination they might could pass for them.  The original pattern comes from a book called Make Room for Christmas by Nancy J. Martin.

This one is still a flimsy.  My original plan was to do a small lap version, but my husband convinced me to go big this time.  He mentioned she couldn't cuddle with her hubby at Christmas time under a small quilt.  So I made more red and white blocks and more trees.

Since this will be her first Christmas quilt from me I want to do a little custom quilting and make it fancy.  Since I spent a little extra time on the piecing I didn't have the time I wanted to quilt it like I want in time for the hop.

But the backing is sewn together and batting is picked out and the plan is to have this quilted and mailed after Thanksgiving.

This has been a fun hop that inspired me to get my gifts finished and it has been fun to see other gift inspiration, from from large to small, from all the other bloggers. There is something to inspire everyone.

Make sure to check out all the other posts.   If you missed any here is the full list of all the hoppers.  Make sure to visit their site and see what inspiration they may have for you.

One Block Wonder - Blue Heron Panel

This is my second One Block Wonder using a panel

I saw this Panel made into a OBW on the One Block Wonder Quilt Forum Facebook Group and knew I had to make one.

The first panel I used last fall on the Halloween OBW  had a border around the panel.
This time I wanted to skip the border and have the hexagons blend with the panel.

I cut my original strips 2 3/4 inches and got a lot of small hexagons to work with.
I used almost all of them for this quilt.

Finding the perfect layout took quite a while.

I had it up on the design wall for a long time and moved hexagons around several times till I found a layout that spoke to me.

I pressed all the seams open.
Makes it lay flatter and easier to quilt.

For the quilting, I wanted to carry the design elements from the panel into the hexagons.

I used the quilting to follow the curve of the clouds on through to the hexagons. For the rest of the panel I traced the bird and the lilies in with the thread.

The rest of the hexagons got an all over flower meander.

These One Block wonder quilts are addicting.
I have already purchased fabric to make a couple more.

With this one finished I can cross one item off my list for the second quarter Finish-A-Long for 2019.  Yay! I finally have a UFO finished off my list for the first time in a long time.  Each quarter I usually work a little on a lot of them, but never finish one.  So I'm super excited to have one completed!!  This one was started in December of 2018 and I finished it, complete with label and hanging sleeve, in June 2019.
