Island Batik Pieced to Perfection Blog Hop

I have been itching to show off this new quilt I made for the Island Batik "Pieced to Perfection" Blog hop!  There is also a giveaway by Island Batik. Keep reading to see how to enter.

I got to play with the Island Batik fabric line called Park Avenue, a Claudia Pfeil Design Original, which is should be arriving in quilt shops next month!

The challenge for this blog hop was to use either Foundation Paper Piecing or English Paper Piecing in our projects. I went for the Foundation version and fiddled around in EQ8.

I tried out designing blocks using the curved drawing options.  They turned out pretty good, but I still have some learning to do to get all the blocks to line up perfectly and to have the actual paper piecing pattern print out with curves.

Some printed correctly and some printed half curvy and half blocky,  I do believe it was the way I drew out the shapes but I'm not 100% sure what I did. I will have to go back and watch more You Tube vidoes and play around some more.

After getting the layout done, my next challenge was dispersing the colors and fabrics to keep my yardage under half a yard for each print.  All the colors in this line play so well together it ended up being easy to mix and match the prints to make everything flow.

I used 15 of the 20 prints that came in the Bundle.

I opened a package of Hobbs Heirloom Premium Wool batting for this one. It quilted up fantastic and has such a nice fluffiness to it.

I used a Schmetz 90/14 needle for the piecing and the quilting.

I had enough white Aurifil thread for the quilting and the perfect blue for the binding.

I did some free motion quilting on this one using the points of the blocks as my guides. I don't enjoy marking my quilts so I am glad there were lots of points on this one.

This was a fun project from beginning to end. I really enjoy paper piecing and had a good time sewing out each unit. I didn't even mind taking the papers off the back.  There is something fun to me about tearing perforated paper.

Make sure to check out my fellow Ambassadors who are also showing off this fabric line today:

Sashing and Cornerstones

I am diligently working on getting my Christmas Dresden quilt top done by the end of January.
Not quite sure how this month got away from me so fast, but there are only two days of January left.
Getting the top done by the end of January is my ALYOF goal so I will be spending the rest of tonight in the sewing room.
The sashing is already sewn together and  I sewed a little bit during my lunch break today and got most of the 9 patches finished.

Tonight I will make the red red centers to cover the holes in the dresdens.
After that all I need to do is sew the rows together.
Lets hope all goes well in the sewing room tonight!

ALYOF 2014 Final Link up

My 2014 goals for ALYOF were to finish quilting several quilt tops. Most of the tops had been sitting in the closet for a couple years waiting for their turn at the machine.  I am happy to say I did pretty good until October rolled around and I forgot where my sewing room was from time to time.  No Worries, I'll just move my Oct/Nov goal (didn't even make a Dec Goal) to 2015.

Over all I finished 9 quilts.  I am happy about that and so are some of the new owners.  There is a final Link Party for everyone who completed 6 or more goals for the 2014 ALYOF.  You can see the link party here.  Go check it out and cheer everyone on!

ALYOF November Goal

I'm usually posting my last month's finish and then the new goal, but for this month there is no finish for October. So I'm making the goal for November is the same goal from October.

October was a crazy busy month and I didn't even get a chance to look at my dresden plates.
This month I am determined to get them finished.

Check out all the other goals for November here at the ALYOF link up party.

ALYOF Finish and October Goal

I finished this quilt with a few hours to spare for the September ALYOF link up.
You can click here to see all the other finishes for September.

I decided to take out the light red chevron fabric in  the center sashing, but I kept it as an inner border. I quilted it using an all over meander pattern.

I wanted a darker navy fabric for the binding to match the Reunion fabric, but I didn't have any in my stash so I went with the darkest blue I had.  I was worried at first, but it turned out pretty good.
The quilt measures about 45 x 50 and I already have a little cutie in mind to mail it to.
This quilt is also on my third quarter list for 2014. So go to knock another UFO off my list.

My October goal is to finish the quit top for these Dresden plates.

They are all sewn together, they just need a backdrop.
I am aiming to finish only the top this month because this is costume month and I know most of my sewing will be going toward that, but I really want to make some progress on this quilt because I want it on my couch for the Christmas holiday.

So my goal is one Dresden quilt top.

Charity Quilts Basted and September Goal

Not much purge progress this week, so I didn't get to be part of the link this time around,  but I am still slowly chuggin' along.  This morning I basted the three boy charity quilts.   Since I expect these to get washed frequently, I plan on doing a simple  meander. They should quilt up in no time.

I also need to post my September goal for  ALYOF.

This month I am going to work on my left over reunion quilt.
I used all the leftover pieces from my strip tube quilt to make this top.
I'm not happy with the red sashing so I am thinking about taking that out and redoing it.
Unstitching isn't always the best part of quilting and I think that may keep this project in the UFO pile for a long time, so to make sure it get done, I am making it my September goal for "A Lovely Year of Finishes". I want to redo the top and have a new finished quilt top to add to my pile.

Here it is with me testing the borders and this is where I last left it in May of 2012.

Time to finish it up.

Another UFO Complete - Baby Cakes

This pattern is called Baby Cakes by Black Mountain Needleworks.
The pattern and the fabric came together in a kit from Connecting Threads.
I started it in 2012.  I finished it last week.

The fabric is flannel and it makes this quilt super soft!  I love it!

And I am proud to say that with this finish I have completed my August goal for "A Lovely Year of Finishes" and I did it before the last hour of the last day of the month like I normally do. Yay!

It is also my fifth finish for my third quarter "Finish A-Long", and with a little more than a month to go for this quarter, I may beat my old record of 6 finishes.  I'll keep you posted.

ALYOF: August Goal

This top is a pattern called Baby Cakes.  I made it from a kit I bought from Connecting Threads April of 2012. I am making it my August goal for A Lovey Year of Finishes.

My quilt top pile is getting smaller and smaller. I use to have too many to count, but now, thanks to these UFO finish a longs I can finally see the bottom of the pile. YaY!

FQSQA Finished!

Last night I put the last stitches in my Fat Quarter Stars Quilt Along Quilt.
This quilt was my July goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes.

I started this quilt in September of 2011 when I joined Moose on The Porch Quilts' quilt along.

Every couple weeks a new star pattern was released.
I got all my stars done each week and even got my top done on time.
But then it sat in the quilting pile until now.

I used an orange fabric for the background.  I bought a fat quarter of it for the blocks and when the bolt went on sale, I bought more for the backing and the binding.

I had to have some pictures ready to post on the link party before it closed last night, so I took it out on the porch in the dark last night hoping to get a good photo. The porch light gave it an interesting look.

Then I got the idea to turn the quilt hoping more light would shine on it, but It didn't work out like I thought.
I got a good shadow of my quilt holder though.
This is also a finish I can knock off my third quarter list for the 2014 Finish A-long.
Yay! This is my third finish for this quarter.

ALYOF June Completion and July Goal

Phew, finished this at 11pm last night, just in time to post my finish for the ALYOF for June.
I took a quick picture last night, so I had something to post on the link party,  but I had to use the flash and the quilting didn't show up so great.  This morning I was able to get some better pictures.

I basted this quilt yesterday Morning around 9am.
I was lucky to get it all quilted and bound in one day.

The blocks came from a swap from the old IFQ (International Friendship Quilters) group.
The first six blocks came from:
Me -   Pamela M.  - Beatrice M.
Pauline G. - Tarnyia S. - Carole B.

The last six come fromL
Me - Val D. - Karin F.
Maureen M. - Ann M. - Nancy N.

I had to sign up for two groups to get 12 blocks.  That is why there are two done by me.

This quilt is also on my second quarter finish a-long list.
That gives me three finishes so far for Q2.
I still have until the 6th of this month to finish more projects on my list.
Let's see how much sewing I can cram in this week.  :)

AS for my July Goal for ALYOF, I plan to finish my quilt from the Fat Quarter Star Quilt Along.
It was on my Q2 FAL list, but I know it will be moving to my Q3 list for the 2014 FAL so putting it as my July Goal should help get this one off the UFO list.
